POETRY: You ~ ADEBO GLORY
YOU
In a castle deeply hidden from civilization my world exists.
A world of unicorns, happiness, never-dying flowers and all that isn't real.
So far from the harsh reality of life,
so serene I forget the fire edging closer and threatening to consume all that is me.
The hardest part of our existence is finding a little peace.
Isn't all we do in life to be at peace in our souls?
Yet not so many people find such peace in their life.
Most people do when they're on the brink of death, others don't find it even after their demise.
Some are lucky to find it when they are still young while others do when their bones are weak.
Some people find peace in the arms of their soul mates, while others do in a field of their favorite flowers.
Some consider family as peace while others find peace in staring at the sunset.
You came into my life like a force of nature.
I couldn't push you away as much as I didn't want to.
The fire around me didn't bother you not even the thorns protruding out of my skin in place of body hair.
You claimed to not feel the heat and burns from the fire as you helped me quench them and live like a human again.
Like a toddler, you held my hand as I took my first steps.
You helped me demolish the castle that kept me from the real world and as a team, we faced the world together.
You didn't seem like a mortal to me
Until I felt your body still and unmoving
And your eyes shut
never to crinkle at the edges out of genuine laughter.
Tell me why you decided to leave before I can run.
How do I exist as a person without you?
Do I smile and face the world or withdraw back into my shell?
In place of my castle, there is only rubble of dirt and stones as we took it down together.
Nature brought you to me
And took you back before I could fully comprehend your presence.
You broke me only to put me back together
and then you left so I could find myself,
only you won't be coming back.
But... I've found my peace in a stranger
One who we conceived together.
I promise never to build again the castle
I promise to live and not just exist
I will always love you.
Yours forever,
Hisriri.

Brief Notes On The Poem
This poem was sparked by a true story I heard about a sad and suicidal woman who was helped out of it and brought back to life, only to pass away from a minor ailment just as she was about to emerge out of her shell. (A bit personal but let's not go there). The poem's topic falls within this category. A free stanza, little to no emphasis was given to end words that rhymed. It is about a depressed person, of any gender, who frequently escapes reality by daydreaming and living in a fantasy world. Yet, someone shows up to guide, assist, and provide support in overcoming the suffering and adjusting to life in the real world. She is confident that she will be fine and won't ever experience the lowest stage of her life again even though the person passes away too soon before she has fully recovered. This is because she now has a piece of him in her—their child. And she vows to love him forever.
